Periodisation is a logical approach to getting fitter and stronger, working on the concept of overload and adaptation. Heather is on hand to explain why it may be something useful to integrate into your training plans. Subscribe to GTN: Check out the GTN Shop: Block periodisation was introduced around the 80s and 90's, making traditional periodisation even more old school. The primary idea for traditional periodisation is to prepare for a major peak, by completing varied and high effort training followed by a taper towards an event. Block periodisation is a more modern preferable approach, allowing athletes to peak several times throughout the season by using smaller more focused training cycles before pre-event tapers.
